The pine cone has been in the Vatican courtyard for centuries — the Fontana della Pigna, massive, bronze, ancient, sitting in plain sight in the heart of the institution that spent the better part of two millennia telling its congregation that the kingdom of God was somewhere outside themselves. The pine cone is the pineal gland. The pineal gland is the third eye. The third eye is exactly what the smoke rising from the microphone is designed to obscure — drifting from the words into the heads of the listeners below, whose eyes are closed, whose faces carry the particular expression of people receiving rather than seeking.
The pine cone towers behind the speaker like a secret hiding in the architecture. It was always there. It will keep being there. The smoke doesn't make it disappear. It just makes it harder to focus on while the words are coming.
