Then turn around.
A cartoon pope — round, robed, smiling, completely at peace — sitting cross-legged on a throne of stolen wisdom. The Bhagavad Gita. The Vedas. The Tibetan Book of the Dead. Paganism. Buddhism. Stack after stack of everything that was burned, banned, buried or rebranded — and he's sitting on top of all of it holding a golden cross like he built something instead of demolished it.
Behind him the church steeple rises sunny and cheerful against a blue sky. Fluffy clouds. Picture perfect.
On either side Hypatia weeping. Pythagoras weeping. The mathematician who gave humanity the music of the spheres and the philosopher torn apart by a Christian mob in Alexandria — both watching from the corners with their faces in their hands.
The smile on the pope is the most devastating detail. He doesn't feel bad about any of it.
